He was the son of Henry Gale, a railway signalman, born 1865 in Langham, Rutland and his wife Rebecca Gale (nee Smith, married in the 3rd quarter of 1887 in the Market Bosworth, Leicestershire district), born 1861 in Bagworth, Leicestershire. David Henry was born in 1893 in Wigston, Leicestershire, his siblings were, Susan Charlotte, born 1891, Mary Annie, born 1892, Edward George, born 1894, Emma Elizabeth, born 1896 and Constance, born 1899, all his siblings were born in Wigston, in March 1901 the family home was at Clarks Road, Wigston. In April 1911 David was employed as a press worker, and was residing in the family home at 12, Glen Gate, South Wigston, Leics., together with his parents and siblings, Susan, an ice worker, Mary, a dress mender, Edward, a shoe trade worker, Emma, a biscuit trade worker and Constance a schoolgirl.
The War Diary records: 16 Nov-14 - (Morning Report) In front right there was no digging in the German trenches during the night. Nothing further to report. Impossible to work in the farm enclosure on night, as immediately we began enemy’s battery from their new position opened fire – work went on as usual in other sections. Casualties killed 4. On Friday December 25th 1914 The Leicester Journal published the following article under the heading. “THE ROLL OF HONOUR.” – Private David Harry Gale, of the 2nd Leicester’s, was shot through the head while signalling, by a sniper, on November 16th.
On Friday February 26th 1915 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “BROTHERS KILLED IN ACTION” – Pte. Edward Geo. Gale, of the 2nd Batt. Leicestershire Regiment, was killed in action (at a place unstated) on February 4th. He was 20 years of age, and the second son of Mr. H. Gale, 12, Glengate, South Wigston, his elder brother, David, aged 21, having been killed on November 16th last. Both came over with the Indian Expeditionary Force, and were as boys and young men inseparable, Mr. Gale has thus lost his only two sons, besides which his nephew, whom he adopted and brought up, was badly wounded in the battle of the Aisne.
