He was the son of William Edwin and Alice Gertrude Smith. The War Diary for today records that the Battalion were in the Front Line trenches at St. Elie and that there was the usual trench routine, Lieutenant Acting Captain C. H. V. Cox awarded the Military Cross, C.R.O. 657 6th May 1917. Operational Order number 178 re relief received from Brigade. Casualties, other ranks B Company 2 killed and 1 wounded.
