He was the son of William Bryett, a metal bedstead manufacturer. In the 3rd quarter of 1888 in the Islington, Middlesex district, Alick’s father died aged 34. In April 1891 Alick Gilbert, born 1879 in Islington, Middlesex was residing in Billericay, Great Burstead, Essex as a school boarder, also residing with him was his brother Edwin Clement, born 1880 in Islington. In March 1901 Alick was a metal bedstead maker and was residing at 111, Offord Road, Islington together with his wife Grace Bryett, (nee Hopkins, married on the 25th August 1900 in the Parish Church of All Saints, Battle Bridge, Islington, Middlesex), born 1877 in Islington. In April 1911 Alick was employed as a railway weigh man and was residing in the family home at Stathern, Leicestershire, together with his wife and children, Ethel Violet Grace, born 13th August 1902 in Islington, and baptised on the 21st September 1902 in St. Clement’s Church, Barnsbury, Middlesex, George William, born 3rd April 1904 in Hornsey, Middlesex and baptised on the 29th May 1904 in St. Mary’s Church, Hornsey and May Louise, born 1907 in Islington, also residing with the family was Alick’s widowed mother in law, Elizabeth Ann Hopkins, born 1850 in Islington. Alick first entered the theatre of war in France on the 4th May 1915, he was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War and Victory medals.
The War Diary records: 20 Oct-16 - Lieutenant F. J. DIGGINS and 2nd Lieutenant’s C. N. C. COPEMAN and H. T. GRANT-ANDERSON with 11 other ranks arrived this morning. The Battalion found a fatigue party for the Supply and Transport Depot. The Parades for the evening and Night Operations were cancelled owing to the Brigade Gymkana which was held in the vicinity of THE PIMPLE, Lance Corporal BEARD ran a dead heat in the 100 Yards Flat (British), and also won the Obstacle Race for British Troops. The Companies were paid out during the day. At night the No. 1 Mesopotamia Concert Party gave an entertainment which was largely attended by members of the Battalion. Temperature maximum 95.00, minimum 56.00.
On Friday November 3rd 1916 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “LOCAL AND DISTRICT NEWS.” – STATHERN. – ANOTHER SOLDIERS DEATH. - It is with deep regret we record the death of another of our village heroes in the person of Private A. Bryett. Some time subsequent to the commencement of the war deceased joined the forces and after training went to ---. He was invalided home later on, with “trench feet.” After a complete recovery he proceeded to his depot, and was sent out to ---, where he has been for a considerable time. News was received on Friday morning by his relatives that he was dead. Before joining he was employed on the railway, being engaged chiefly at the ironstone sidings. His wife died some few years ago, and the utmost sympathy is felt for his three young children, and other relatives. Deceased was about 36 years of age, and is numbered among those who at the call of duty nobly responded and has laid down his life for his King and Country.
