In March 1943, he was called up and posted to the General Service Corps but soon moved to the Royal Artillery before transferring (April 1943) to the Army Air Corp serving in the 12th battalion Yorkshire Regiment . On D-day, he parachuted into Normandy and was killed on 10 June 1944. He is buried in Ranville Cemetery, Calvados .

His parents were Frederick Thomas Hull (butcher of 13 Turn St, Syston) and Leah Antoinette Augusta (previously Fasquil, née Dumont ). As his mother was French he enjoyed dual nationality. His mother committed suicide on 30th August 1939 whilst his father died on 29th September 1939 .
