Death Of Syston Naval Officer
The death took place in a naval hospital during last weekend of Sub-Lieutenant John W. V. Whenham, R.N. (Fleet Air Arm), eldest son of Mr K. Leader, of Brook Street, Syston, commercial teacher at Melton Mowbray Technical College.
Sub-Lieutenant Whenham, who was aged 22, was a member of the Leicestershire County Constabulary attached to headquarters before volunteering for the Navy. He was transferred to the Fleet Air Arm last May. He was educated at Loughborough College.
One of his brothers, H. F. Whenham, is a member of the staff of the County Weights and Measures Department. The other brother is at Loughborough Junior College.
Sub-Lieutenant Whenham was buried at Portsmouth with full naval honours.
