Source: Michael Doyle Their Name Liveth For Evermore: The Great War Roll of Honour for Leicestershire and Rutland.
He was the son of Zillah Walton (nee Lydall) a hosiery trade machinist, born in the April quarter of 1870 in Loughborough, Leicestershire (daughter of Edmund Lydall, 1843-1889 and Emma Horsley, 1844-1881). Joseph Edmund Carter Walton was born in the July quarter of 1896 in Leicester, his siblings were, Ernest Carter Walton born in the January quarter of 1898 and Reginald Carter Walton born in the January quarter of 1900, both his siblings were born in Leicester, in March 1901 the family were residing with their mother as housekeeper, at 2, Cecilia Road, Knighton, St. Mary Magdalene, Leicester, this being the home of Joseph Carter a coal loader, born on the 5th December 1873 in Loughborough and baptised on the 27th February 1874 in All Saint’s Church, Loughborough (son of Joseph Claricoat Carter, 1845-1922 and Elizabeth Mawby, 1849-1911).
In April 1911 Joseph was employed as a hosiery trade seamer and was residing in the family home at Welford Road, Wigston Magna, Leicestershire, together with Joseph Carter a drayman, Zillah Carter, his mother, recorded as being married for fifteen years, and siblings, Ernest and Reginald.
FAMILY NOTES: Joseph’s mother had previously married Thomas Walton in the October quarter of 1891 in the Blaby, Leicestershire district.
Joseph’s mother married Joseph Carter in the April quarter of 1915 in Leicester.
Joseph was born and registered at birth as Joseph Edmund Carter Walton, his widowed mother having not married Joseph’s father, Joseph Carter, however, as Joseph had assumed and used the name of his father during the course of his life, including when he enlisted, I have followed the obvious and clear desire that he retain his father’s surname and have therefore recorded him under the surname of Carter as opposed to the true family surname of Walton.
Joseph’s army service enlistment documents do not survive, therefore the currently available information pertaining to his military service has been obtained from the following sources: - 1921 HMSO Publication, Soldiers Died in the Great War, 1914 - 1919, WW1 Service Medal and Award Rolls, Army Registers of Soldiers’ Effects, WW1 Medal Rolls Index Cards, WW1 Pension Ledgers and Index Cards and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Registers.
