He was the son of James Ball a Farm Labourer, born 1867 in Stoke Golding, Leicestershire and his wife Sarah, born 1877 in Stoke Golding, Leicestershire. Alfred was a Farm Labourer and was born in 1895 in Shenton, Leicestershire, his siblings were Annie, born 1900 in Shenton, Leicestershire, James Edward, born 1903, Albert Henry, born 1905 and Agnes Mary, born 1908, the latter three siblings were all born in Thurlaston, Leicestershire. In April 1911 the family home was at 13, Willey's Square. Thurlaston, Leicestershire. The War Diary entries for the 10th and 11th April 1917 record. Battalion disposition as before. The two Companies attached 64th Brigade forced to withdraw and turn a little of their left flank owing to a counter attack on the 64th Brigade. Entry for the 11/4/17, Dispositions as April 10th. 28 casualties reported from the 8th April to the 11th April 1917.
