He was the son of James and Hannah Kettle of Burley on the Hill, Oakham, Rutland, and the husband of Mary Emily Smith (formerly Kettle) of Thurlaston, Leics.

Herbert was one of 12 children born to James and Hannah Kettle of Burley, Rutland. His younger brother George was killed in France on 16/04/1917 and is remembered on the memorial at Burley church.
