ContributeSource: Michael Doyle Their Name Liveth For Evermore: The Great War Roll of Honour for Leicestershire and Rutland. He was the son of Mr and Mrs J. W. Hollick of Tinwell Cottages, Rutland. He was a labourer before enlisting, and both he and his brother, Private J. W. Hollick enlisted on the same day, their father also served in the same regiment and sustained serious head injuries. He embarked for France at the beginning of February 1915 and got through safely until the 5th December 1917 when both he and his brother were badly wounded. He was taken to the 48th Casualty Clearing Station in France suffering from severe head, facial and leg injuries, he died never having regained consciousness. His brother who was admitted to the same ward, made a full recovery from his injuries. In a letter to his mother, written by the matron of the 48th Casualty Clearing Station, France, she said:- “It is with the greatest regret I have to be the bearer of such bad news to you. It is this, that two of your sons were bought in here yesterday to this hospital, and one poor lad, Private Charles Edward Hollick, has succumbed to his wounds this day. He was badly wounded in head, face and leg, and was mercifully unconscious from the time he was bought in till his death. His poor brother, Private J. W. Hollick, did not know the other was in the same ward as himself till sister asked him if Private C. E. Hollick was any relative of his. . . This terrible news will be a fearful blow to you. . . Your late son will be laid to rest in the Military Cemetery near here (Rocquigny).”
