He was the son of James and Annie Dolby, and the husband of Annie Dolby. Other sources show Tinwell, Rutland as place of residence. He was a painter by trade, he embarked for France on March 29th 1918. During the great advance he was killed instantly by a shell, the place of his death is unknown. The War Diary for today records. EQUANCOURT. 3.00am.
Battalion W.22.c. in support to 1st WILTSHIRE REGT. and 6th LEICESTERSHIRE REGT. ZERO 7.20am. Objective line VILLERS GUISLAIN – east of EPEHY. From W.22.c. the Battalion moved in artillery formation in bounds reaching RAILWAY TRIANGLE north of EPEHY at 9.00am. Enemy barrage very close at first but eased off. 64th Brigade in CRICKET TRENCH X.19.central, Battalion passed through encountering heavy machine gun fire from direction of EPEHY. HQ established “14 WILLOWS ROAD” X.20.b. at 10.00am. Battalion in their objective position in same vicinity. Situation obscure, “A” Company sent to re-inforce 1st WILTSHIRE REGT. on ridge X.21.a., “D” Company to get in trench with 62nd Brigade on left X.14.d., “B” and “C” Companies in “14 WILLOWS ROAD” 2.00pm. Situation on right obscure. POPLAR TRENCH held by the enemy. Two Battalions 58th Division attacking that area, on left 62nd Brigade held ridge west of VILLERS GUISLAIN. 3.00pm. “A” Company is attacked, enemy driven off, “A” Company inflicted heavy casualties on enemy throughout the day, and enemy half hearted bombing attacks easily beaten off. 6.00pm. Battalion to attack at MEATH POST. Attack cancelled. 1st WILTSHIRE REGT form defensive flank west and north west of MEATH POST. Intense artillery activity on both sides. 9.00pm Supply Tank arrived.
