He was the son of Charles Brown a quarry man, born 1852 in Belmesthorpe, Rutland and his wife Mary Ann, born 1848 in Paddington, Middx. Walter Simpson Brown was born in 1885 in Casterton, Rutland, he had one sibling, a brother Charles S., born 1883 in Casterton, Rutland, in April 1891 the family home was at Chapel Lane, Little Casterton, Rutland. In March 1901 Walter was an apprentice wheelwright and was residing in the family home at Little Casterton, Rutland, together with his parents and brother Charles. In April 1911 Walter was employed as a carpenter and was residing in the family home at Road End, Little Casterton, Rutland, together with his parents. Prior to enlistment he was a wheelwright, though he suffered from an internal complaint, his motto was, “Deeds not Words”, and being determined to do his bit, he joined up and served in France. The strain being too much, he was invalided home and he died in the Birmingham Military Hospital. Other sources show his date of death as the 31st July 1917, and his place of residence as Little Casterton, Rutland.
