He was the son of John and Elizabeth Harrison, and the husband of J. Barwell (formerly Harrison) of The Toll Bar, Great Casterton, Rutland, he left a child. Prior to enlistment he had been a coal carter. The circumstances surrounding his death were recounted by a comrade. They were moving forward with a number of horses to a battery, and when they were two thirds of the way to their position, they were attacked by about seventeen enemy aeroplanes with bombs, one of the bombs wounded Gunner Harrison so severely that he died within half an hour, three other drivers were wounded and only two escaped injury.
