He was the son of Mr and Mrs W. Tooley, and the husband of Mrs L. O. Crown (formerly Tooley) of Great Casterton, Rutland. Prior to enlistment he had been a waggoner, and at the time lived with his wife at Whitwell, Rutland. He embarked for France on the 31st January 1916 and took part in engagements at La Bassee, the Somme and elsewhere, he died from a shell wound to the chest and was buried in the Cerisy-Gailly French Military Cemetery four miles west-south-west of Bray. He left one child.
