He was the son of George and Esther Woodruff. He left a widow and one child. He had been a horseman before enlisting in “Kitcheners Army”, and after four months of training at Grimsby embarked for France where he served with the 1st Battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment until February 1916, when he came to England after being wounded a second time. He returned to his depot at Grimsby, where he received his first stripe, and was promoted to instructor. He was sent to Newcastle for a short period, and then went to Aldershot, where he won a first class certificate as an instructor. He later proceeded to Ireland in October 1917, where he was stationed at Cork for six months, and then he returned to France, having transferred to the North Staffordshire Regiment on leaving Ireland. He was promoted to Corporal on the 29th March 1918, and was dangerously wounded on the 8th August, and after undergoing a series of operations, succumbed to his injuries on the 31st August 1918 at No.6 Casualty Clearing Station, France. His elder brother James Roland also died.
