He was the son of Mr and Mrs Arthur Riley of Saxelby, Leics. His enlistment documents record that he gave his father, Arthur Riley of Twyford, Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, England as his next of kin. He gave his trade or calling as Timber Orderman and stated that he was unmarried. Information taken from his medical examination shows that he was 5 foot 5 ¼ inches in height, weighed 12 stone and had a chest measurement of 37 to 38 ½ inches. His complexion was described as fresh with grey eyes and grey hair. It was noted that he had a mole on his left shoulder and two further moles on his right shoulder. He gave his religion as Methodist. His record of service gives the following information. Embarked at Melbourne, Australia aboard H.M.A.T. “Ascanius” 10th November 1915. Disembarked from H.M.A.T. “Ascanius” at Suez, Egypt 7th December 1915. Embarked from Alexandria, Egypt aboard H.M.T. “Tunisian” 16th June 1916. Disembarked at Marseilles, France 23rd June 1916. Wounded in action and admitted to No. 38 Casualty Clearing Station with compound fracture lower legs, wounds to penis and arms 26th November 1916. Transferred to No. 14 Ambulance Train 27th November 1916. Admitted to No.12 General Hospital, Rouen, France with gun shot wounds to both legs 28th November 1916. Died of wounds No. 12. General Hospital Rouen, France 5th December 1916. A parcel containing his personal effects consisting of, Disc, Letters, Photos, Metal Wrist Watch and Strap, 2 Pipes, Belt, Small Keys (4), Wallet, Regimental Colours, Metal Medallion and 2 Egyptian Stamps. was forwarded to his father in England. The death certificate was posted to a Miss M. Freeman of 27, Scott Street, St. Kilda, Victoria, Australia on the 8th February 1917.
