He was the son of Walter, a Gardener, and Rosina Crump. Walter was born in Upton on Severn, Worcestershire, Rosina was born in Shepton Mallet, Somerset. Other sources show the place of residence as the Cottage, Claybrooke Parva, Leics. His brother Leonard also died.
