He was the son of William Thomas Chafer a gas works labourer, born 1858 in Ashby, Lincs., and his wife Mary Ann, born 1860 in Winterton, Lincs. Arthur Thomas was born in 1895 in Coleby, Lincs., his siblings were, John William, born 1883, George, born 1884, Margaret A., born 1887 and Frederick, born 1888, the latter four siblings were all born in Winterton, Lincs., Sarah Jane, born 1890 in Irby, Lincs., Henry Dunn Chafer, born 1891 and Minnie, born 1893, the latter two siblings were both born in Lincs., and Sidney Sanderson Chafer, born 1895 in Winteringham, Lincs., in March 1901 the family home was at 14, Richmond Road, Leicester. In April 1911 Arthur was employed as a junior clerk and was residing in the family home at 92, Knighton Fields Road West, Leicester, together with his parents and siblings John, Frederick, Sarah, Henry, Minnie, Sidney. Albert, born 1902 and Doris, born 1906, the latter two siblings were both born in Leicester.
