He was the son of William Coulson, a house painter, born 1875 in Whetstone, Leics., and his wife Emma Coulson (nee Hollis), born 1870 in Whetstone, Leics. William Henry was born in 1894 in Leicester, his siblings were, Eunice J., born 1897, Lavinia, born 1899 and Alfred R., born 1900, all his siblings were born in Whetstone, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at Whetstone, Leics. In April 1911 William was employed as a house painter, and was residing in the family home at 148, Pool Road, Leicester, together with his remarried father and stepmother, Sarah Jane Coulson (nee Upex), born 1876 in Whetstone, Leics., and his step brothers and sisters, Arthur John Upex, born 1898, Clifford Leslie Upex, born 1899, Sarah Ann Upex, born 1902 and Evelyn May Upex, born 1904, all his step brothers and sisters were born in Cosby, Leics., also residing in the family home were his full blood siblings, Eunice, a shoe trade machinist, Lavinia and Florence. William’s mother Emma, passed away aged 38 in 1907. In the fourth quarter of 1916, William married Sarah Annie Wright in the Leicester marriage registration district.
