This is Frederick Grice, KIA 1st July 1944 serving with the 1st Leicestershire Regiment, but on attachment to the Hallamshire Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment.

His parents are listed as John and Hilda Grice on CWGC records but does not state their residence. The 1939 census, however, shows their address to be 3 Whitwick Moor, on the outskirts of Thringstone.

-----

Lance Corporal Frederick Erick Grice was my grandmother's cousin. He joined the T.A in the 30s and was posted in India as war broke out.
He fought against the Japanese with the Leicestershires, but after a failed attack and being surrounded, him and one other soldier managed to run through Japanese fire to a shoreline. He found a boat and pushed off into the night. They found a remote island and was marooned for several days. Saved by a passing Chinese ship, they were taken to Bangladesh where just so happens were the remnants of his regiment.
Shipped back home He was pushed into another unit and was involved in the battle for Normandy. He died at Caen whilst manning a machine gun pinning down German machine gun fire.
