He was the son of Albert Chamberlain a granite quarry man, born 1865 in Thurlaston, Leics., and his wife Lizzie, born 1871 in Sapcote, Leics. Rowland Edwin was born in 1896 in Thurlaston, Leics., his siblings were, Charles Ernest, born 1893, Edith M., born 1895 and Gladys Evelyn, born 1899, the latter three siblings were all born in Thurlaston, Leics., and Bertha Eugenia, born 1901 in Sutton in the Elms, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at Main Road, Broughton Astley, Leics. In April 1911 Rowland was employed as a quarry labourer and was residing in the family home at Broughton Astley, Leics., together with his parents and siblings, Charles, Gladys, Bertha, Olive Edwina, born 1903, Gerald Claude, born 1908 and Kenneth Neville, born 1909, the latter three siblings were all born in Sutton in the Elms, Leics. The War Diary for today records that the Battalion were in the Front Line trenches. Captain J. W. E. Morse M.C. appointed Acting Major whilst 2nd in command of the Battalion, Lieutenant G. W. Grossmith M.C. appointed Acting Captain whilst in command of a Company, Lieutenant S. T. Hartshorne appointed Acting Captain whilst in command of a Company. All appointments effective 21st April 1917. Casualties other ranks, A Company 1 killed.
