Lost In The Daring
Tribute to Loughborough School Old Boy
Speaking at the annual prize distribution of Loughborough College School on Saturday, Lieut.-Col Sir Robert Martin, chairman of the Leicestershire County Council, paid tribute to one of the school’s old boys, Stoker R. J. F. Whitehead, of Woodhouse Eaves, who was lost when the destroyer Daring was torpedoed last week.
Sir Robert said that education should have two sides, one the equipment of the boy for his work and the other the preparation to enable him to take his part worthily in the community.
There were far too many people who earned only their bread and butter and relied upon others for entertainment, and he advised the boys, when they left school to continue with their hobbies and interests, so as to enable them to amuse and entertain themselves.
