He was the son of Sarah Ann Marriott, a char woman, born 1872 in Wymeswold, Leicestershire. George Harold was born in the 3rd quarter of 1893 in Leicester and was baptised on the 27th January 1895 in Old Dalby Parish Church, he had one sibling, Sarah Elizabeth, born 1896 in Old Dalby, Leicestershire, in March 1901 the family home was at East Street, Wymeswold. In April 1911 George was absent from the family home at Clay Street, Wymeswold, residing there was his mother, a seamstress, (married in the 3rd quarter of 1903 in the Loughborough, Leicestershire district), his step father, John Thomas Hubbard, a boot repairer, born 1866 in Thrussington, Leicestershire and his half blood siblings, Phyllis, a schoolgirl born 1904 and Edwin, a schoolboy, born 1907, both siblings were born in Wymeswold, George was employed as a farm wagoner and was residing at Highthorn Farm, Wymeswold. George first entered the theatre of war in France on the 28th October 1915, he was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War and Victory medals.
The War Diary records: 21 Mar-18 – HEUDICOURT. 5.45 am. Battalion receives order MAN BATTLE POSITIONS. “C” Company comes under orders of Officer Commanding left sector front line (Officer Commanding 1st Battalion LINCOLNSHIRE REGIMENT). “A,” “B” and “D” Companies marched independently to their allotted positions in YELLOW LINE. Battalion Headquarters marched to Railway Cutting at W.23.a.8.1. This operation was rendered excessively difficult owing to a thick fog and heavy enemy gas shelling. Companies established themselves in their positions soon after 7.00 am though stragglers continued to report until 10.00 am.
Disposition “C” Company with the 1st Battalion LINCOLNSHIRE REGIMENT, 3 Companies in YELLOW LINE with left Company resting on Railway at W.23 central, and the right Company at approximately W.18 central. Battalion Headquarters at Railway Cutting at W.23.a.8.1. These positions were maintained all day against repeated attacks by the enemy.
About 12.00 noon a party of the enemy succeeded in getting round the left flank under cover of a sunken road at W.18.c.9.3. This party was engaged by Battalion Headquarters and a gun team of the MACHINE GUN Battalion. A number were killed and remainder (about 50) surrendered.

On Friday May 17th 1918 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “WYMESWOLD.” – LOCAL SOLDIER KILLED. – Private George Marriott, Hoton, formerly of Wymeswold, is reported killed in action.
