He was the son of Henry Bellamy a Railway Labourer, born 1863 in Oakham, Rutland and his wife Elizabeth, born 1869 in Wymondham, Leics. George Eli was born in 1888 in Manton, Rutland, he had one sibling, a sister Gwendoline Grace, born 1891 in Manton, Rutland, in April 1891 the family home was at Chapel Lane, Wymondham, Leics. In March 1901 George was residing in the family home at Main Street, Wymondham, Leics., in the Ecclesiastical Parish of St. Peter, together with his parents and siblings, Grace, and Lucy M., born 1896 in Wymondham, Leics. In April 1911 George was employed as a Domestic Groom and was residing in Brooksby, Leics. The War Diary records that the Battalion had been located at the Ramparts, Ypres near the Menin Gate since the 1st August, intermittent shelling only was reported.
