Charles served 18 years in the army and, as a sergeant with the RFA, won the DCM whiles serving in Gallipoli. On behalf of Shepshed's Volunteer Training Corps, HH Gibbs presented him with a specially commissioned sword to mark his achievement when he returned to the town on leave. Later promoted to Lieutenant, he sustained wounds on Friday 10th August 1917, while serving in Flanders and sadly died the following day. Born in Shepshed, where his mother and most of his relatives lived, Charles has subsequently moved to Northampton, where prior to service abroad, he lived with his wife and son at 33, Albany Road, near Abingdon Park. Charles was gazetted Captain one week after his death, and his body was finally laid to rest at Godwaersvelde British Cemetery, in northern France, on the site of a former Casualty Clearing Station.
