He was the son of George Butler a granite quarry man, born 1860 in Shepshed, Leics., and his wife Sarah Ann, born 1862 in Shepshed, Leics. John Albert was born in 1897 in Shepshed, Leics., his siblings were, James, born 1882, Bateman Butler, born 1888, George, born 1891, Lucy Ada, born 1894, William, born 1896 and Sarah Ann, born 1900, all his siblings were born in Shepshed, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at Bridge Street, Shepshed, Leics. In April 1911 John was employed as a shoe trade finisher and was residing in the family home at Bridge Street, Shepshed, Leics., together with his parents and siblings, George, Lucy and William. His elder brother William also fell in action.
