He was the son of John Hodgkinson of Leicester Road, Shepshed, Leicestershire and his wife Martha, who was the daughter of the late Joseph Williamson of Whitwick, Leicestershire. Joseph was educated at Shepshed and enlisted in the Leicestershire Regiment on the 6th November 1916. He served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from January 1917, until invalided home suffering from rheumatic fever. On recovery he rejoined his Regiment in France in January 1918 and died at No. 38 Casualty Clearing Station on the 24th October 1918 of wounds received in action. Joseph was married at Shepshed Baptist Chapel to Edith Annie, who was the daughter of John Thomas Wortley of Shepshed, and they had a daughter Marjorie who was born on the 16th February 1915. Stopped in GREEN LINE F.2.c. – F.8.b. about 4 hours then moved forward again to north west of POIX DU NORD where we stayed until 05.30. at which hour withdrew to GREEN LINE owing to 62nd Brigade being held up. Stayed the night.
