'First Harborough Old Grammarian to be killed in this War'
Sergeant George Seldon
' The sad news of the death of Sergeant George E Seldon (RAF) of Belton, after previously being reported missing, will be received with sincere and deep regret by his many old school friends of the Market Harborough Grammar School.
George Seldon attended the Harborough Grammar School from 1925 to 1928 and for the whole of that period I found him a close and staunch friend (writes our reporter). We moved from form to form together and when he left to join the RAF he asked me to reconsider my decision not to enter the same service.
''Selly'' was an excellent tennis player and a member of the school's football eleven. He passed his examination for entry into the RAF and for two or three years was at Halton training camp.
He looked and certainly was a typical British airman- full of dash, yet more serious in his work than many who knew him at school would have imagined.
Having joined the Service when he was 16, it was likely when war broke out that he would be quickly put to important duty. A plane in which he was a member of the crew failed to return on May 14th last. He was reported missing and now his mother (he was an only son) has been officially notified of his death.
Sergt. Seldon is the first old pupil of the Market Harborough Grammar School to be killed in this war. Much sympathy is felt for his mother, who lives at Belton.
