He was the son of William Bury a shoe maker, born 1850 in Dublin, Ireland and his late wife, Henrietta, born 1852 in St. Paul’s, Bristol, Glos. Herbert was born in 1888 in Aylestone, Leicester, his siblings were, Richard, born 1874, Frederick, born 1876, Elizabeth, born 1878, Charles, born 1879 and Alfred, born 1882, the latter five children were all born in Bristol, Glos., Edith, born 1884 in Belgrave, Leicester and Emily, born 1886 in Mountsorrel, Leics., in April 1891 the family home was at Napier Cottages, Irlam Street, Wigston Magna, Leics. In March 1901 Herbert was employed as an errand boy and was residing in the family home at 61, Nelson Street, Great Bowden, Leics., together with his remarried father, now a shoe trade riveter, his step mother, Fanny, born 1851 in Market Harborough, Leics., and his siblings, Edith, Emily and Charles, also residing with the family were his step siblings, Ada Bickley, born 1882 in Leicester, Florrie Bickley, born 1885 and Thomas Bickley, born 1887, the latter two step siblings were both born in Market Harborough, Leics., Fanny Bickley, born 1898 in Little Bowden, Northants. In April 1911 Herbert was serving as a Private with the 2nd Battalion Leicestershire Regiment and was stationed at Fort Saint George, Madras, India. The citation in the London Gazette dated 15th April 1916 reads:- “For conspicuous gallantry in reorganising his machine gun team under heavy fire after two men had become casualties and keeping the gun in action, thereby greatly assisting.”

KIRBY MUXLOE MAN HAS SIX SONS IN THE ARMY

Corporal William Bury, now a boot and shoe maker, of Desford Lane, Kirby Muxloe, who served fourteen years in the 1st Gloucester Volunteer Regiment at Bristol, has six sons serving in the army, viz., Fred Bury, 3rd Battalion Leicestershire Regiment, who received two medals with five clasps for service in the Boer War; Alfred Bury, Northamptonshire Regiment, one medal and five clasps, Boer War; Herbert Bury, 2nd Battalion Leicestershire Regiment; L Bury, 3rd Battalion Leicestershire Regiment; W. T. Bury, 2nd Battalion Notts and Derbyshire Regiment; and C. Bury, Leicesters. All are privates.
