He was the son of James Carroll a wool trade sorter and army pensioner, born 1849 in Armagh, Ireland and his wife Frances, born 1865 in Earl Shilton, Leics. Bernard Donagh Carroll was born in 1897 in Fleckney, Leics., his siblings were, Elizabeth, born 1885 in Oadby, Leics., Isabella, born 1886 in Wigston, Leics., Mary, born 1887 and Agnes, born 1888, the latter two siblings were both born in Glen Parva, Leics., Anna St. Clare, born 1890 in St. George’s, Bermuda, West Indies, Eunice Evelyn, born 1891 in Oadby, Leics., Rose Ellen, born 1894 in Leicester, Sarah Jane, born 1895 in Burton Overy, Leics., Philomena Emily, born 1899 in Fleckney, Leics., and Cecilia Mary, born 1900 in Market Harborough, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at Logan Street, Great Bowden, Leics. In April 1911 Bernard was employed as a stay manufacturer’s learner and was residing in the family home at 128, Logan Street, Market Harborough, Leics., together with his parents and siblings, Anna, Eunice, Rose, Sarah, Philomena, Cecilia, Charles Patrick, born 1902, Maurice, born 1904, Philip, born 1906 and Catherine, born 1909, the latter four siblings were all born in Market Harborough, Leics. The War Diary for today records. MAPLE COPSE. Battn relieved by 4th Battn LINCOLNSHIRE REGT. A and D Coy’s proceeded to YPRES BARRACKS. B and C Coy’s and HQ’s to ZILLEBEKE LAKE dug outs. Casualties 2 killed, 25 wounded. Appointments: The following are extracts from the Gazette. Captain C. BLAND to be temporary Major. Lt A. P. MARSH to be temporary Captain. Lt A. T. SHARP to be temporary Captain. 2nd Lt R. C. L. MOULD to be temporary Lieutenant. 2nd Lt C. R. KNIGHTON to be temporary Lieutenant. Strength: (a) 22 N.C.O.’s and men having arrived are taken on the strength of the Battn to replace 25 war worn N.C.O.’s and men sent to Divisional Back Details and struck off strength of Battn. (b) 26 N.C.O.’s and men transferred to England are struck off strength.
