He was the son of Frederick Clapham a printer’s warehouseman, born 1869 in Islington, Middx., and his wife Elizabeth, born 1870 in Old Ford, Middx. Frederick Thomas was born in 1893 in Islington, Middx., his siblings were, Ellen Emily, born 1891, Martha Lydia, born 1896 and Roseina Elizabeth, born 1897, the latter three siblings were all born in Islington, Middx., John William, born 1901 in Old Ford, Middx., in March 1901 the family home was at 8, Summer Street, Bow, Middx. In April 1911 Frederick was employed as a factory worker and was residing at 51, Caxton Street, Market Harborough, Leics., this being the home of his paternal grandparents, Edwin Clapham, a type Founder, born 1847 in London and his wife Sarah Ellen, born 1845 in Birmingham, Warwks., also residing in the family home were his siblings, Ellen, Martha, Roseina and John. The War Diary for the 1st and 2nd August 1917 records. The Battn occupied trenches opposite HULLUCH. In this sector tunnels have in a measure taken the place of communication trenches. The casualties this tour were slight.
