He was the son of Samuel Clements a rubber factory worker, born 1858 in Gloucester and his wife Mary Jane, born 1871 in Ashton, Lancs. Charles Samuel was born in 1894 in Tyldesley, Lancs., he had one sibling, a sister, Ethel, born 1891 in Tyldesley, Lancs., in March 1901 the family home was at 1, School Lane, Market Harborough, Leics. In April 1911 Charles was employed as a type foundry worker and was residing in the family home at 1, School Lane, Market Harborough, Leics., together with his parents and sister Ethel.
