He was the son of Alfred James and Mary Ann Ludlow. The 1911 census records for 3, Great North Station Road, Peterborough, Northants. Alfred James Ludlow, head of the family and a Railway Parcel Porter, born 1870 in Clapton, London, and his wife Mary Ann, born 1873 in Moulton Chapel, Lincs., also Alfred William, son, single and an Assistant Butcher, born 1896 in Brixton, London, Cecil James, son and a Schoolboy, born 1899 in Brixton, London, Albert Edward, son and a Schoolboy, born 1901, Harold Norman, son and a Schoolboy, born 1904 and Bertie Ernest, son, born 1908, all the latter three children were born in Peterborough, Northants. The War Diary entry for the 30th April 1916 records. RED LODGE. At 12.45am the enemy sent over gas in our sector followed by a heavy bombardment of HILL 63 and reserve camps around. About 8 casualties were caused by this, and a Y.M.C.A. hut adjacent was burnt down. About 1.30am the order was received to take action and the Battalion paraded and moved off taking up a support line in the CAVALRY TRANCHES, Battalion HQ being at FORT BRANDON. The bombardment by our artillery was very heavy and ceased about 2.30am. after which the situation calmed down. At about 4.00pm the order was received to stand down and the Battalion returned to RED LODGE. Our casualties during second bombardment were 1 killed and 20 wounded. Remainder of the day quiet. Cleaning of camp etc. Relief of 2nd LEINSTER REGT in 142 and 143 and C2 carried out. Situation quiet. Gas reported on left of C2 at 9.45pm and a gas cloud was seen right over on left.
