He was the son of Sarah J. Brockway, and the step son of Thomas Brockway. The 1901 census records for Flimwell, The Mount, Ticehurst, Flimwell, Sussex. Thomas Brockway, head of the family and a Market Gardener, born 1835 in Donhead, Wiltshire and his wife Sarah J., born 1851 in Brighton, Sussex, also George Robert Titley, step son, a Railway Porter, born 1885 and John Titley, step son, a Grocers Assistant, born 1888, both sons were born in Hawkhurst, Kent. His enlistment documents record that he gave his mother Mrs Sarah Brockway of Sunny Banks, Etchingham, Sussex as his next of kin, his trade or calling was given as Traveller, he also stated that he had previously served from April 1910 as a Private in the 5th Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment. Information taken from his medical examination shows that he was 5 foot 9 1/2 inches in height, weighed 134 pounds and had a chest measurement of 33 1/2 inches. His complexion was described as dark, with greay eyes and brown hair, he gave his religion as Church of England. On enlistment he was posted to the 7th Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment on the 15th September 1914, promoted Lance Corporal on the 5th October 1914, promoted Corporal and Lance Sergeant on the 4th January 1915. He first entered the theatre of war in France on the 1st September 1915. He was posted as killed in action between the 25th and the 27th September 1915, and his next of kin, his mother was notified of his death on the 25th October 1915. The medal index card records that he was awarded the 1915 Star, Roll K/1/2/B3, Page 338 and the British and Victory Medals, Roll K/1/101B4, Page 561.
