He was the son of William Walker, a stay cutter, born 1859 in Shoreditch, Middx., and his wife Emily Walker, born 1860 in Shoreditch, Middx. Walter was born in the 2nd quarter of 1884 in Haggerston, Middx., his siblings were, Albert, a schoolboy, born q4 1882, Clara Maud, a schoolgirl, born q4 1886 and Henry, born q2 1887, all his siblings were born in Shoreditch, Middx., in April 1891 the family home was at 99, Maidstone Street, Shoreditch, Middx. In March 1901 Walter was employed as a stay cutter and was residing in the family home at Bath Street, Little Bowden, Northants., together with his widowed mother and siblings, Albert, a stay presser, Clara a type worker, Henry, Lily, born 1892 in Shoredithch, Middx., William, born 1894 and Louis, born 1897, the latter two siblings were both born in Little Bowden, Northants. In April 1911 Walter was employed as a leather trade finisher and was residing in the family home at 191, Knox Road, Wellingborough, Northants., together with his wife Florence Walker (nee Smith, married in the 2nd quarter of 1907 in the Northampton district), born in Stafford, and their children, Walter John, born 1908 in Northampton and Florence Maud, born 1910 in Wellingborough, Northants. Latterly of 28, Monarch Road, Kingsthorpe, Northants. Walter volunteered in October 1915, and in February of the following year proceeded to the Western Front, where he took a prominent part in the Battle’s of Albert, the Somme, Arras, Ypres, Cambrai and other engagements. He was unhappily reported wounded and missing and later, killed in action on March 28th 1918. He had been awarded the Military Medal for conspicuous bravery in the Field at Arras, and was entitled also to the General Service and Victory Medals. “His memory is cherished with pride.” 191, Knox Road, Wellingborough, Northants.
