He was the son of Charles Houghton, a coal miner, born 1845 in Barton in Fabis, Notts., and his wife Sarah Ann, born 1845 in Warwickshire. Arthur Henry was a coal miner and was born in 1887 in Ibstock, Leics., in April 1911 the family home was at 1, Spring Cottages, Ibstock, Leics. On Tuesday February 27th 1917 The Leicester Mercury published the following article under the heading. “LOCAL CASUALTIES” – Private Arthur Houghton, of the Leicester’s, whose home was at Spring Gardens, Ibstock, was killed in action at the front a few days ago. He enlisted immediately after the declaration of war, and had been in France nearly two years. The War Diary entry for the events from the 15th to the 21st February 1917 records. WINNEZEELE. The Battalion relieved the 1st KING’S SHROPSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY in the trenches on the morning of the 15th February 1917 and remained in the front line until relieved by the 7th LEICESTERSHIRE REGT on the 21st February 1917.

MEMORIAL SERVICE

In connection with the death in action of Private H. Houghton, of Spring Road, Ibstock, a memorial service was held in the Parish Church, on Sunday afternoon last, conducted by the Rev. S. Flood, M.A. The Ibstock Church Lad’s Brigade attended, and sounded the “Last Post” at the end of the service. Mr W. Dunstan presided at the organ and played the “Dead March” in “Saul”. The Rector addressed the congregation during the service, and made appropriate reference to the nobility of the sacrifice made by the deceased soldier.
