TRENCHES HANNESCAMPS. 2nd Lt T. P. CREED took out a patrol of 13 other ranks. At 4.15am when near the OSIER BED in E.17.b. (Map 57.3.N.E.) they sighted an enemy patrol -?- our wire at E.17.b. 75. 2nd Lt CREED at once hurried across and gave battle, it appeared that an officer and 3 other ranks were in our wire whilst a covering party of men lay on the high ground south east of these four. Our patrol was met by a heavy fire from this covering party. Half the patrol engaged this party whilst the remainder attempted to surround the four men. The officer was shot through the shoulder and captured, he was a Lieutenant of the 55th REGT (2nd GUARDS RESERVE DIVISION) he had lived in SHEFFIELD and could understand English. The remainder of the enemy patrol fled by the ESSARTS ROAD. Lt CREED’s party lost one man killed Private A. GARNER 4104, who was shot through the neck as he was charging with his bayonet. At -?-pm we arrived back at SOUASTRE having been relieved from the trenches by the 4th Battn LEICESTERSHIRE REGT. During the relief BERLIN TRENCH and the HANNESCAMPS – BIENVILLERS ROAD was heavily shelled causing considerable casualties, but no casualties to our parties coming out. One house in BIENVILLERS was entirely demolished by a large shell, blocking both two roads, and sentry Private FARMERY of this REGT who was on unit duty was hidden in the debris. Just before the relief took place we had two casualties in our front line from 77mm shell fire. 2 officers and 100 men went to the Division School at ST. ANAND for instructional purposes. Later in the day half this number were returned.
