He was the son of James Chambers a game keeper, born in the July quarter of 1862 in East Farndon, Northamptonshire and baptised on the 28th September 1862 in the Church of St. John the Baptist, East Farndon (son of John Chambers, 1817-1903 and Anne Horsley, 1825-1894) and his wife Minn (Minnie) Chambers (nee Flint, married on the 24th December 1884 in the Church of St. John the Baptist, East Farndon), born on the 5th March 1864 in Marston Trussell, Northamptonshire and baptised as Minnie on the 27th March 1864 in the Church of St. Nicholas, Marston Trussell (daughter of Edward Flint, 1833 and Sarah Jones, 1838). John was born in the July quarter of 1888 in Sibbertoft, Northamptonshire and baptised on the 14th October 1888 in the Church of St. Nicholas, Marston Trussell, his siblings were, Mary Ann, born in the October quarter of 1885 in East Farndon and baptised on the 1st November 1885 in the Church of St. John the Baptist, East Farndon, Lucy, born on the 27th February 1887 and baptised on the 24th April 1887 in the Church of St. Nicholas, Marston Trussell and Eliza, born in the January quarter of 1890 and baptised on the 16th February 1890 in the Church of St. Nicholas, Marston Trussell, the latter two siblings were both born in Sibbertoft, in April 1891 the family home was at Lodge, Front Street, Sibbertoft.
In March 1901 John was residing in the family home at Lodge, Front Street, Sibbertoft, together with his father, a game keeper, his mother and siblings, Eliza, Clara, born in the January quarter of 1895, Edith Frances, born in the January quarter of 1898 and Emily, born in the April quarter of 1900, the latter three siblings were all born in Sibbertoft.
In April 1911 John was absent from the family home at Game Keepers Lodge, Hothorpe Hills, Theddingworth, Leicestershire, residing there was his father, a woodman and keeper, his mother and siblings Clara, a domestic house maid, Edith a schoolgirl and Emily, a schoolgirl, meanwhile John was employed as a game keeper and was residing as a boarder at Warrengate Bungalow, Barnet, Middlesex.
John’s army service enlistment documents do not survive, therefore the currently available information pertaining to his military service has been obtained from the following sources: - 1921 HMSO Publication, Soldiers Died in the Great War, 1914 - 1919, WW1 Service Medal and Award Rolls, Army Registers of Soldiers’ Effects, WW1 Medal Rolls Index Cards, WW1 Pension Ledgers and Index Cards and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Registers.
