He was the son of George Aris a Plumber and House Painter, born 1866 in Uppingham, Rutland and his wife Sarah, born 1866 in Ailsworth, Northamptonshire. Charles was a House Painter assisting in the family business and was born in 1894 in Uppingham, Rutland, his siblings were Ernest, born 1896, Gladys, born 1897, Arthur, born 1899 and Leslie born 1906, all his siblings were born in Uppingham, Rutland, in April 1911 the family home was at High Street, Uppingham, Rutland. At the age of 13 he joined the old Volunteer Corps. As a Bugler, and he was also for three years with the local Territorials. He rejoined his old company of the Leicestershire T. E. Regiment in September 1914, and embarked for France on the 26th February 1915. He fought on the Ypres front and was killed at Messines, Belgium. Lance Corporal Aris had acted as servant to Captain Wynne, who was killed on the same day. Captain Norman Marriott, writing to the deceased parents says:- "He was a sound soldier in and out of the trenches . . . and I have lost a soldier friend in your son." Charles took considerable interest in cricket and football in Uppingham, and was by trade a plumber. The War Diary for today records. TRENCHES. Assembled for attack at 5.00pm. At 8.30pm attacked FOSSE 3 with C Coy on the right, B Coy on the left, D Coy in support and A Co carrying. The left Coy was held up and lost all its officers, Captain WYNNE killed, 2nd Lt FARRAR killed, 2nd Lt NELSON wounded. The right Coy went right through killing about 80 of the enemy, taking about 8 prisoners and destroying 3 machine guns and 2 trench mortars. Our casualties 5 officers and 91 other ranks.
