He was the son of George Baines a General Jobbing Gardener, born 1868 in Ayston, Rutland and his wife Emma Jane Baines (nee Jarvis), born 1874 in Bratoft, Lincolnshire. John Jarvis was a Grocer's Errand Boy and was born in 1896 in Uppingham, Rutland, his siblings were Nellie, born 1899 in Uppingham, Rutland and George Cecil, born Woodnook, Lincolnshire. In April 1911 the family home was at Brown's Terrace, Uppingham, Rutland. Before the war John was employed in the goods department at Narborough Midland Railway Station, Leicestershire. On enlistment he was attached to the 10th Light Railway Operating Compnay of the Royal Engineers, and embarked for France on the 12th March 1917. He died of bronchial pneumonia at the 62nd Casualty Clearing Station B.E.F. and was buried in a cemetery near Courtrai, Belgium. He served as John Jarvis.
