He was the son of Joseph Barfield a Coal Carter, born 1853 in Uppingham, Rutland and his wife Mary, born 1852 in Rockingham, Northamptonshire. Henry was a House Painter and was born in 1886 in Uppingham, Rutland, his siblings were Mary J. E., born 1880, Joe, born 1888 and Emily M., born 1892, all his siblings were born in Uppingham, Rutland. In March 1901 the family home was at Adderley Street, Uppingham, Rutland. In April 1911 Henry was employed as a School Porter, and had been married for four years, and was residing in the family home at Bayley's Cottage, Adderley Street, Uppingham, Rutland with his wife Ellen, born 1886 in Henley on Thames, Oxfordshire and their children, Charles, born 1908, Harold, born 1909 and Leslie, born 1908, all the children were born in Uppingham, Rutland. Henry left a widow, three sons and a daughter. He first went on wara service as a guard as Seaton Midland Viaduct in April 1915. He embarked for France in May 1917, and took part in actions in the Arras sector, and was killed in action at Passchendaele, Belgium.
