He was the son of John Joseph Chapman a house decorator, born 1871 in Uppingham, Rutland and his wife Jessie Annie, born 1877 in Penge, Surrey. Henry was born in 1898 in Uppingham, Rutland, he had one sibling, a sister Amy, born 1897 in Uppingham, Rutland, in March 1901 the family home was at Queen Street, Uppingham, Rutland. In April 1911 Henry was a scholar and was residing in the family home at Queen Street, Uppingham, Rutland, together with his parents and siblings, John Alfred, born 1903 and Frederick Walter, born 1906, both his siblings were born in Uppingham, Rutland. Prior to enlistment he was a dairyman. He had been in training barely one month at Blandford Camp, Dorset when he died from valvular disease of the heart and pneumonia. His parents were summoned to see him, but on arrival at the hospital they were informed that he had just died.
