He was the son of Herbert, a Gardener born in 1858 at Uppingham, Rutland and his wife Harriet Thorpe, born 1859 in Hatfield, Herts. His siblings were Charles H, born 1886 who was a Watch Makers apprentice and Marjorie, born 1891. Arthur was a schoolmaster by profession, being first a pupil teacher at Uppingham, afterwards assistant master at Luton, Bedfordshire and then at Westerham, Kent. Some years later he returned to Uppingham as assistant master in his old school. He enlisted in the army on the 1st March 1916, and embarked for France in July 1917. After serving abroad for six months he was invalided home through an injury. He died from heart failure following influenza at the V.A.D. Hospital, Cottingham Road, Hull. He had belonged to the Uppingham Church Choir, and both as a vocalist and cello player was extremely popular in the district.
