He was the son of George Alfred, an Insurance Agent and his wife Clara Caunt Wright. Bernard was baptised on the 18th April 1897 at Barrow upon Soar, Leics. He had two siblings, Lillian Louisa and George Pears. He was a member of the Church Lads Brigade. Bernard enlisted at 17 years of age, and served through the Irish Rebellion, he was killed in a voluntary effort to carry mail to his comrades through enemy fire. Other sources show his Christian name as Bertram. The War Diary for today records. HESBECOURT. B and C Coy’s took over front line during evening. 8.30pm. Artillery preparation. 9.15pm. 2nd/4th Battn LINCOLNSHIRE REGT attacked FERVAQUE FARM, but failed owing to inability to clear wire.
