He was the son of John Street, a coal carter, born 1853 in Belper, Derbyshire and his wife Annie Elizabeth Street (nee Dexter, married in the 3rd quarter of 1878 in the Loughborough, Leicestershire district), born 1855 in Costock, Nottinghamshire and baptised on the 26th February 1855 in the Parish Church, Costock. George, a schoolboy, was born in 1883 in Belgrave, Leicester and was baptised on the 9th December 1883 in St. Peter’s Church, Belgrave, his siblings were, Annie Elizabeth, a schoolgirl, born in the 1st quarter of 1879 in Loughborough, Leicestershire, John, a schoolboy, born 1881 and baptised on the 9th January 1881 in St. Peter’s Church, Belgrave, Harriett, a schoolgirl, born 1886 and baptised on the 20th May 1886 in St. Peter’s Church, Belgrave and William Henry, born 1889 and baptised on the 13th February 1889 in St. Peter’s Church, Belgrave, the latter three siblings were all born in Belgrave, in April 1891 the family home was at Short Street, Belgrave. In March 1901 George was employed as a dyers labourer and was residing in the family home at 18, Roughton Street, Leicester together with his father, a coal merchant, his mother and siblings, Annie, a shoe trade machinist, John, a dyers labourer, Harriett, a cotton trade worker, William, Joseph, born 1891 and baptised on the 24th September 1891 in St. Peter’s Church, Belgrave and Gertrude Ellen, born 1895 and baptised on the 18th January 1895 in St. Peter’s Church, Belgrave, the latter two siblings were both born in Leicester. On the 5th August 1907, George married Alice Sherriff in the Leicester district. In April 1911 George was employed as a dyers labourer and was residing in the family home at 6, St. Leonard’s Street, Leicester, together with his wife Alice, born 1885 in Enderby, Leicestershire, also residing in the family home was a Niece, Lilly Sherriff, a schoolgirl, born 1907 in Leicester. George and Alice had two children, Norman George, born on the 2nd October 1911 and Winifred Ellen, born on the 6th February 1917, both children were born in Leicester.
George’s Army enlistment documents do not survive, all that is known of his military service is that he enlisted into the Leicestershire Regiment, being allotted the service number 39029, and was posted as a Private to the 8th Battalion Leicestershire Regiment and it was with this unit that he first entered the theatre of war in France at an unknown date, but after the 31st December 1915. He was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
The War Diary records: 17-22 Oct-17 - CAMP AT HAZEBROUCK. Cable trench digging parties were found daily by the Battalion for work in the forward areas between CLAPHAM JUNCTION and FITZ CLARENCE FARM J.14.d.45.95. (Reference GHELUVELT), this was carried out under very trying circumstances the men working in heavy hostile barrages, and moving to and from the work under shell fire. More working parties were -?- to and from the camp in motor lorries. Casualties, 1 officer wounded 2nd Lieutenant F. C. FLOOD and 86 other ranks killed, wounded and missing.
