He was the son of Robert and Mary Woods of High Street, Ketton, Rutland, and the husband of Ethel Maud Woods, he left one son. Before enlistment he had been a gamekeeper, he embarked for France on the 12th September 1916. He was killed by a bullet the following April. The War Diary for today records that the Battalion were in the Front Line. 2nd Lieutenant G. W. Smale left the Battalion to join the Royal Flying Corps. The Battalion were relieved by the 8th Bedfordshire Regiment, the relief commenced at 8.30pm and was reported completed at 12.30am on the 22nd March. Casualties, other ranks A Company 1 wounded, B Company 1 killed.
