He was the son of Mr and Mrs Robert Savage. He had been a machinist prior to enlisting. He was the first man to enlist at a recruiting meeting held in Ketton, giving up a good post in the works of Messrs. Blackstone and Company Limited, Stamford. He embarked for Turkey on the 1st July 1915, and took part in the landing and fighting at Gallipoli. He was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal on the 7th August 1915 and on the 17th of the same month died as a result of a shell wound at the 19th General Hospital in Alexandria, Egypt.
