He was the son of Arthur Isaac Capendale, a farm shepherd, born 1867 in Aslackby, Lincolnshire and his wife Sarah Ann Capendale (nee Cawthorn, married in the 4th quarter of 1891 in the Grantham, Lincolnshire district), born 1858 in Coston, Leicestershire. John William was born in the 4th quarter of 1896 in Laxton, Northamptonshire, his siblings were Margaret, born 1892 and Catherine, born 1894, the latter two siblings were both born in Stoke Rochford, Lincolnhire and Arthur Henry, born 21st April 1899 in Laxton, in March 1901 the family home was at Laxton. In April 1911 John was employed as a farm labourer and was residing in the family home at Ketton, Rutland, together with his father, a shepherd, his mother and sibling, Arthur, a schoolboy. John’s mother died in the 4th quarter of 1926, aged 68 in the Stamford, Lincolnshire district and his father died on the 27th January 1934, aged 67 in Ketton, Rutland.
John was a member of the Territorial Force and was at camp in Bridlington, Yorkshire when war broke out. He embarked for France on the 27th February 1915, and at the time of his death, which was caused by a fragment of shell entering his neck, he was acting as transport driver.
John enlisted/attested into the Territorial Force on the 14th May 1913 in Ketton, and was allotted the service number 1624. He gave his place of birth as Laxton, near Kettering, Northamptonshire and age as 17 years 8 months. His marital status was given as unmarried and his trade or calling as horseman, in the employ of Mr. T. C. Molesworth. He gave his present address as Ketton, Rutland
His medical examination took place in Ketton on the 28th May 1913 and recorded his apparent age as 17 years 8 months, that he was 5 feet 8½ inches in height, had a chest measurement of between 33 and 35 inches, his vision was described as good and his physical development was described as good.
He gave his next of kin as his father, Arthur Isaac Capendale, Ketton, Rutland

He was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
The War Diary records: 30 Jun-15 - ZILLEBEKE. At 11.00pm enemy shelled No.6 trench with high explosive and universal shells. Several casualties. At 5.00pm “C” Company took over No’s 7 and 8 trench. Each Company found its own supports.

John was born in Laxton, Northants in around 1897 and was the eldest son of Arthur and Sarah Capendale.
