On the 20th January 1954, Flight Officer Fernihough was flying in WF391 Varsity T1 1 ANS Near Hullavington 4 with three other crew members: Flight Lieutenant Kenneth William GRICE Navigator, Flight Sergeant John WRIGHT DFC Air Signaller and
Acting Pilot Officer Ronald Albert MOORE Student Navigator.
On return to base the pilot requested a BABS (Blind Approach Beacon System) approach but advised that he had poor RT and BABS reception. No further calls were received and when the wreckage was found the position of the undercarriage and flaps suggested that the aircraft was being set up for an overshoot when the pilot lost control and may have stalled. Flight Lieutenant Fernihough received his DFC for his bravery whilst flying 65 sorties with 37 Sqn in the Middle East during 1943. Flight Sergeant Wright's DFC was awarded in December 1944 when he was a Warrant Officer with 75 Sqn. All four crewmen were killed in the incident.

Formerly a farmer at Newstead, Stamford, and Market Overton, Flight-Lieut A M Fernihough lost his life in an aeroplane crash in Wiltshire early on Wednesday morning.
He was the pilot and one of the crew of four of a Varsity aircraft from Hullavington who were all killed when the machine came down on open land near the village of Norton, a few miles from its base. They were engaged on a training flight.
Flight-Lieut Fernihough, who had rejoined the RAF only a few months ago, was the son-in-law of Mr and Mrs F B Clark of Market Overton. They were informed about the accident on Wednesday and immediately left for Hullavington...
Flight-Lieut Fernihough farmed Folly Farm, Newstead, until 1952. He and his family went to reside at Whissendine and at one time he considered going to New Zealand. However, he decided to re-join the RAF, in which he served during the war.
He had also farmed in Market Overton where he became a very popular figure.
The Varsity aircraft is the military version of the Viking and is sometimes known as the "flying schoolroom".
The plane came down in a field on the Easton Grey road, near Norton, and RAF rescue teams were quickly on the scene to work through the night in drizzle and mud.
The machine struck rising ground and ploughed a deep trench in the mud.
