He was the son of John Cox a brickyard labourer, born 1857 in North Luffenham, Rutland and his wife Elizabeth Mary Cox (nee Hales), born 1859 in Spalding, Lincolnshire, John Robert was an agricultural labourer and was born in 1888 in North Luffenham, Rutland, his siblings were, George H., an agricultural labourer, born 1887, Herbert G., born 1891, Edgar James, born 1893, Cyril, born 1895 and Eleanor Mary, born 1898, all his siblings were born in North Luffenham, Rutland, in March 1901 the family home was at the Fox and Hounds Inn, North Luffenham, Rutland. In April 1911 John was employed as a miller’s labourer and was residing in the family home at North Luffenham, Rutland, together with his parents and siblings, Edgar, Cyril, Eleanor and Amy Winifred, born 1902 in North Luffenham, Rutland. Also residing with the family was John’s married sister Frances Elizabeth Carter, born 1884 in North Luffenham, Rutland and his nieces, Ethel Irene Carter, born 1906 and Iris Amy Carter, born 1908, both nieces were born in Ramsey, Hunts. In the third quarter of 1913, John married Christabel Kate T. A. Adams in the Basford, Nottinghamshire registration district. In the first quarter of 1921, John’s widow married Joseph F. Rose in the Uppingham, Rutland registration district. They resided at High Street, Morcott, Rutland. He embarked for France on the 21st May 1915.
