William was the son of Haydn and Jane Thomas of 28 Byron Street, Cwmaman, Aberdare, Glamorganshire. He was educated at the Aberdare Boys' Grammar School in Aberdare (Merthyr Tydfil). he is buried in the Aberdare Cemetery Glamorganshire.
